This is my Trench Warfare project. It will include information about: how the war started, joining up, life in the trenches, weapons, the key battle (Somme), a few diary entries and how the war ended. Below is a brief timeline covering the key times of WW1. There is a bibliography as well.

World War One had left Europe devastated. Those countries that had fought in it, had suffered casualties never experienced

Facts-140,000 Labourers from China helped dig trenches for the Allies on the Western Front.
-Over the course of the war the Allies managed to produce more than 6,500 tanks! -When war broke out the government asked for 100,000 volunteers to join the army. They got 750,000 in the very first month. |
Glossary
JOINING UP
-Patriotism- The feeling of being proud of your country and prepared to die for it (Dulce et Decorum est by Wilfred Owen)
-Conscription- Making people go into the army by law. Government forced men to join.
-Comradeship-The feeling of being together. The soldiers ate together, played games, slept in the same areas. This was often seen among soldiers who also fought together in the first world war.
-Propaganda-information, ideas, opinions, or images, often only giving one part of an argument, that are broadcast, published, or in some other way spread with the intention of influencing people's opinions.
-Allies-states or nations that are bound together by
alliance.
SPARK AND TRENCH
-Archduke Franz Ferdinand-helped to cause the war (spark). He was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip. This spark (short term cause) also caused the long term causes.
-A long narrow ditch used to protect and hide oneself from attack. Trench warfare is most commonly associated with World War
One.
AMMUNATION
-Machine gun-A gun that fires very rapidly and repeatedly.
-Rifle-A firearm that is designed to be fired from the shoulder.
-Zeppelin/blimp-A rigid balloon type airship with a covered metal frame. It was filled with gas and named after its German inventor,
Ferdinand von Zeppelin. The zeppelin was also known as 'blimp.'
-Poison gas- Mustard gas was used to suffocate the enemy.
-A dreadnought was a heavily armed battleship of the early 20th century.
BATTLE
-Somme-The Battle of the Somme started in July 1st 1916. It lasted until November 1916. This battle was probably the most deadly and impacted a great deal. There were other battles too.
IMPORTANT PEOPLE
-Kaiser Wilhelm II- was emperor of Germany and abdicated. He promised German support for Austria.
-Gavrilo Princip- He was a Serb who shot AFF and his wife.
-Vladimir Lenin was the Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars of the Soviet
